So, yesterday, with the help of some of her friends, Lea organized a party for a group of foreigners from Malaysia, Japan and China in the kitchen of her parents’s office.

To break the ice (=make people feel more comfortable and natural), Lea decided to start off with a group activity. Of course, she had many options, but she didn’t know how to choose the right one. How can anyone organize the perfect party for people who don’t know each other very well? Sports activities are great, but not everyone is good at running or jumping. Also, many games are not easy to manage when the participants don’t speak English very well. So, Lea chose a cooking class. She and her friends asked all the participants to prepare a simple recipe [ ressipi] together. She just wanted everybody to cook a basic carrot cake. The idea was for people to interact and work together as a group. However [ ha-u-ever] (=but) one lady from Malasia just took Lea’s place and cooked the cake by herself! All the other people spent this time talking to each other, but only to those who spoke the same language as them. One of Lea’s friends tried to save the day by showing everyone funny videos of puppies playing with kittens. All the people enjoyed the videos, but Lea didn’t feel that it helped them with their English! They probably learned how to bark and meow, but they didn’t learn how to speak…

Next time, Lea will try to organize things differently. But how? …
